Project type
Public Art and Architecture Competition
Date
2026-2010
Location
The Forks, Winnipeg Manitoba
The Warming Huts Festival is an internationally recognized celebration that brings together cutting-edge design, creativity, and the stark beauty of winter. Each year, artists, architects, and designers from around the world are invited to create imaginative warming huts along the frozen Red River Mutual Trail in Winnipeg. These temporary structures are part shelter, part sculpture, and part playful experiment—transforming the icy landscape into an open-air gallery.
Blending art, architecture, and recreation, the festival invites the public to skate, ski, or walk among the installations, discovering spaces that inspire warmth, wonder, and conversation. Since its founding in 2009, the Warming Huts Festival has grown into a global event, showcasing visionary projects that challenge the limits of building in extreme climates while celebrating the joy of community gathering in the cold.
The festival is more than a design competition—it’s an experience of winter itself. Each hut tells a story, sparks imagination, and demonstrates how creativity can transform even the harshest environments into places of connection and beauty.
